Bukit Mertajam Arts & Culture Festival 2018
Bukit Mertajam, Penang
Organiser | Seberang Perai City Council & Rakan BM
Bukit Mertajam is a historic town located in central Seberang Perai (previously known as Province Wellesley). The historic town was founded over 130 years ago by the early Chinese settlers around the Hock Teck Cheng Sin Temple (Tua Pek Kong Temple) which slowly grew to its current size and scale. Throughout the years, the town slowly gather on its own, the rich culture and history which is unique on its own. The town played a major role as the trading post for the spices to be exported to Europe via the British and later on for goods distributors from Penang towards other parts of colonial Malaya. With the change of time and latest suburban expansion around the town, we now see the historic town in decline.
The aim of this festival was to protect and nurture these positive values and cultural assets in the light of steep decline in the urban fabric and economic activities in and around the historic town. Moreover, awareness of the history and importance of the historic town as the center of trade and culture for Seberang Perai/ Province Wellesley need to be raised among the youths in order to preserve the arts and cultures heritage.
